In my classes I like to give as many criteria-based assessments as possible, with it being civics and a course they need to pass an EOC in, I feel it is necessary to have a good gauge of where they are at. Every week the students take a vocabulary/topic quiz which is usually given a point grade (ex. 15/20 instead of putting 75% or C) so that students can see, and possibly be encouraged, by their scores. There is also a formative assessment that we take at the end of every week on the benchmark we have just covered, which allows for more targeted learning and reteaching on questions many might have gotten wrong or missed for various reasons. Once these are retaught there is a rubric I use on a 1-3 scale (1 being still needs help, 2 being confident, 3 all good) to assess where the students are in relation to our benchmark.
One I would like to develop and apply is one that my colleague does where they grade each others assignments and then correct whatever they need to. He then puts that peer assessment in as a grade as it requires a good deal of understanding to grade each other.
