Based on the 4th grade Florida BEST benchmark, ELA.4.R.2.2: Explain how relevant details support the central idea, implied or explicit, I would have students read a predetermined nonfiction text (4th grade reading level) where they need to identify the central idea and relevant details.  I would use a scale that breaks down the benchmark into three categories.  The categories would be:

  1. Identify the central idea
  2. Support with relevant details
  3. Explain the Connection

I would use a scale of 0-2 where 0 is the student was unable to identify any of those categories/criteria, 1 was they identified part or were close, and 2 being they correctly identified the criterion.

  2 1 0

Identify the central idea

Clearly and accurately identifies the central idea

Partially correct or vague central idea Incorrect or missing response

Support with relevant details

Two accurate and relevant supporting details

One accurate detail or two partially relevant details No relevant details were identified

Explain the Connection

Clear explanation of how both details support the central idea

Partial explanation No explanation or off-topic or was not correct
