One formative assessment I have used before is a gallery walk. It was successful because it broke up the normal classroom procedure and allowed the students to learn together in a different environment and with a group that has different learning abilities. It was engaging and the students seemed able to retain the information better as well.

One assessment I would like to try is the jigsaw. I enjoy the idea of breaking up a lesson into smaller parts and having the students learn individual aspects and then sharing all of their information as a larger class. The smaller amount of information may be easier as well for learners to comprehend instead of taking a large chunk of information and getting lost.
