When considering modifications for second language learners, it is important to recognize that the goal is not to simplify content to the point of lowering expectations, but to make the material accessible across all levels of language proficiency. The book Selecting and Modifying Materials to Differentiate outlines several considerations such as using visuals, adjusting readability levels, and providing scaffolds like graphic organizers or sentence frames. These strategies ensure that students can engage with content meaningfully while developing both language and academic skills.

Two additional considerations I would add are:

  1. Integration of Home Language Resources – Whenever possible, providing bilingual glossaries, translated key vocabulary, or opportunities for students to discuss concepts in their home language before producing English responses can be powerful. This leverages students’ existing knowledge and validates their linguistic identity, which research shows supports transfer to second language learning.

  2. Tiered Output Options for Assessments – Instead of relying solely on written essays or multiple-choice exams, teachers can offer multiple modes of demonstrating understanding (oral presentations, visual projects, partner explanations). This allows ELLs at different stages of proficiency—whether early production or advanced fluency—to show content mastery without being limited by their current English writing ability.
