Scenario Response 7
Scenario Response 7
in preparing to observe a colleague who is applying brain-compatible teaching strategies for ELLs, I developed a checklist that focuses on both the classroom environment and instructional practices. Since we have been studying ways to engage multiple senses and contextualize learning, I want my feedback to be specific, constructive, and connected to what we’ve learned in workshops. My checklist includes the following areas:
Classroom Environment
-
Seating arrangement: Is the seating flexible and adapted for the type of activity (pairs, circles, small groups)?
-
Visuals: Are posters, charts, or student work displayed to reinforce key concepts?
-
Use of space: Does the teacher vary the learning environment (e.g., group work on walls, movement activities, possible outdoor learning)?
-
Sensory elements: Are props, music, or other stimuli used to deepen learning and memory?
Instructional Strategies
-
Contextualization: Does the teacher link new material to students’ prior knowledge or real-life experiences?
-
Engagement: Are there multiple entry points for ELLs (visuals, hands-on activities, modeling)?
-
Language supports: Are scaffolds like sentence frames, word walls, or structured routines visible and consistently used?
-
Student participation: Are ELLs encouraged to share, collaborate, and interact in meaningful ways?
Brain-Compatible Practices
-
Use of music: Is music used to set tone, increase focus, or reinforce the theme of the lesson?
-
Movement: Are there opportunities for students to move, act out, or physically represent learning?
-
Memory supports: Does the teacher use repetition, storytelling, or episodic memory strategies to reinforce retention?
-
Atmosphere: Is the classroom climate positive, supportive, and culturally welcoming for ELLs?
