Scenario Response 1
Scenario Response 1
For my parent workshop with new families from other countries, I want to create an experience that both communicates our classroom and homework rules clearly and honors the diverse cultural values families bring with them.
Objectives:
-
Help parents understand classroom routines and homework expectations.
-
Show respect for families’ cultural beliefs and practices.
-
Build strong partnerships between home and school to support student success.
How It Will Be Conducted:
We’ll begin with a potluck meal, where families can bring a dish that represents their culture. This will set a welcoming, community-building tone.
Afterwards, I’ll give a short presentation with visuals (PPT + handouts) to explain:
-
Daily classroom routines and behavior expectations.
-
The purpose of homework, what it looks like, and how parents can support it at home.
-
The difference between social English and academic English, and why homework helps strengthen academic skills.
I also plan to invite a bilingual parent volunteer or cultural liaison to share their experience navigating school expectations, and then lead an interactive small group activity. Parents will role-play common scenarios (like balancing homework with family responsibilities) and discuss solutions together.
Finally, we’ll close with a Q&A circle where parents can openly ask questions, share concerns, and suggest ways the school can better support their family.
Key Content Topics:
-
Language use: how social and academic English differ.
-
Clear classroom and homework expectations.
-
Respect for cultural practices and flexibility when possible.
-
Strategies for ongoing home-school communication.
As a follow-up, families will receive a bilingual handbook of rules and expectations and an invitation to share feedback. I want them to leave the workshop feeling empowered, respected, and confident in supporting their children’s learning.
