I believe the videos point out the many benefits in collaborative learning for ELLs, particularly in regards to their enhanced language development possibilities and their chance to enhance their academic achievements. In the first instance, group work would provide ELLs with the opportunity (through necessity) to use and practice their language skills in a real and meaningful context. Through interacting with peers, they would receive immediate feedback which would work to help them develop their fluency and accuracy in their forms of expression. Additionally, the collaborative model would also allow them to advance their academic achievement. As the students worked together, they would have to share their understanding of the materials and assignment and explain concepts to one another, each building on the knowledge of the others and, as such, gaining a deeper understanding of the content. This continual exchange of information, the discussion and analysis, would work to improve their critical thinking skills. This continual engagement would by necessity force them into greater class participation which would help pave the way for greater academic success. My district believes so heavily in the collaborative model that two days of every week are specifically set aside for small group work.
