Mod 10 Video Discussion
Module 10
In the video the teacher referred to some techniques regarding the letter placement, she stated the “ow” at the end of the word makes the O sounds like in the word blow; while “ow” in the middle of the word makes the ow sounds like in the word clown. Of course there are exceptions to the rule for instance the word cow. Having that technique is a great starting point, it gives the student a reference and the confidence to attempt the word instead of saying this is too hard or I don’t know. Even if the student attempts the word and it does not follow the rule like in the word grown the student has the awareness that the sound of the rule doesn’t sound right or make sense so try the other sound. As previously mentioned, long division is a concept that many of my students struggle with, especially with remembering the steps. One way that I teach them to remember the steps is with the saying “ Does McDonalds Sell Burgers.” Each beginning letter D, M, S, B represents the steps in order for division.. Divide (Does) Multiply (McDonalds) Subtract (Sell) Bring Down (Burgers). Having a mnemonic device or strategy like this not only helps students memorize the steps for long division by making it more approachable and easier to remember because the students can often relate to it.
