I commend the student on his ability to read and decode at almost grade- level proficiency, getting to that point is an accomplishment. My job as his current teacher would be to close the gap in academic language proficiency and background knowledge. Utilizing this strategy will result in greater comprehension, understanding and view point. To implement this I would pre-teach key vocabulary and concepts, and to activate prior knowledge I would utilize images or short videos related to the topic to spark his interest. Additionally there may be a need for teaching explicit reading comprehension through various techniques including visualizing, predicting, questioning (self-questioning), summarizing.
