Scenario Response 1
Scenario 1
The student would be classified part of the Brain Based Theory. The "silent phase" is a completely normal part of language acquisition. Although she may not be attempting to communicate/ respond she is actively processing and absorbing the new language. Due to the limited support outside the classroom, creating a rich and supportive language environment in the classroom is even more crucial. As her teacher I would continue to provide a low stress environment by encouraging her but never pressuring her. Because she is still in the silent phase I would place even greater emphasis on visuals, gestures and objects. I would also simplify my language and accept non-verbal responses; and as she begins to open up I would acknowledge and praise her attempts, but never pressure her to speak more than she's comfortable with.
