Mod 1 Discussion: Classroom Implications of Linguistic Theory
In my experience of teaching a second language, I think the most important aspect is for our students to feel comfortable when they are in our classes. Our goal should be to provide a non-judgmental environment and let them know that the most important thing is to communicate and motivate them to believe they can do it.
The problem I see in my district is the number of standardized tests they must take and this creates a lot of stress for them. I work with students who have been in this country for less than two years, and I see the silent period a lot. We need to try to make them feel in an environment free from prejudice, and excessive correction can end up repressing them. I often use games and activities in pairs and groups to help them socialize and feel comfortable. It has worked very well for me; and I believe that, as educators we should take a little from each learning language theory to achieve the goals of our students.
