After reading Integrating Culture into Language Learning by Trang Nguyen, it’s super clear how important culture is when learning a new language. Culture isn’t just something extra — it’s a key piece that helps students really understand how and why a language is used the way it is. The article talks about three main levels that students go through: cultural knowledge (basic facts and info), cultural awareness (comparing and understanding different perspectives), and cultural competence (actually using that knowledge in real-world, respectful ways). When students grow through these levels, they become more confident, open-minded, and capable of meaningful communication. One topic I think would be great for inspiring interest in another culture is "Food Around the World." You can learn so much about a culture by exploring its meals, eating habits, traditions, and celebrations. Plus, students LOVE talking about food! You could compare meals, ingredients, eating customs, or even cooking methods, and let students bring in family recipes or stories. It’s a fun and easy way to naturally build interest and make cultural connections. A resource I’d recommend is "Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain" by Zaretta Hammond. It breaks down how understanding students' cultural backgrounds can actually support better teaching practices, especially when it comes to language and learning. It’s a super practical book and great for any teacher working with diverse learners.
