Workshop Title:
“Welcome to Our Classroom: Partnering for Success”

Objectives:

  • Help families from diverse cultural backgrounds understand classroom expectations and homework routines.

  • Create a welcoming, inclusive environment that values and honors cultural differences.

  • Establish ongoing communication and trust between parents and school staff.

Workshop Format:

  • Potluck Dinner: Families are invited to bring a favorite dish from their home country to share. This allows for community-building and cultural exchange.

  • Presentation (PPT): A simple, visual PowerPoint presentation that outlines:

    • Classroom routines and expectations

    • Homework policy and tips for helping at home

    • Behavior expectations and support systems

    • Communication tools (school website, ClassDojo, Remind, etc.)

  • Guest Speaker: Invite a bilingual parent who has successfully navigated the school system to share insights.

  • Translated Materials: Provide handouts translated into the languages represented in the group. Include visuals and examples of homework and classroom work.

  • Interactive Activity: Families will participate in a mini “mock school day” simulation to see how students engage with classroom expectations.

Cultural Sensitivity Practices:

  • Open the event with a statement honoring all cultures and acknowledging that school systems vary globally.

  • Allow time for Q&A, with interpreters available.

  • Provide an anonymous suggestion box for families to share thoughts or questions they may be uncomfortable voicing aloud.

  • Invite families to write down or share customs from their home culture that could be honored or incorporated into the classroom.

Follow-Up:

  • Send home a thank-you note and summary of key points.

  • Invite families to join a “Cultural Connections Committee” to help keep the conversation and collaboration going.
