I want to teach my students specific rules and clues to identify unfamiliar words and show them how to work through possible solutions by thinking out loud. I believe that this approach will enable students to gain reading independence and experience success when they come across unfamiliar words. In future lessons I plan to implement straightforward steps like these to help students build effective techniques for decoding words independently.
