Mod 11 Discussion: Teaching Critical Literacy
Critical literacy stands as an essential skill that students need to master in today's educational landscape. The process requires students to move past simple comprehension to questioning texts and thinking critically about their deeper meanings. A review of the Critical Literacy Resources folder demonstrated that alternative texts and bookmark techniques could become powerful assets in my teaching practice. Students gain empathy and understand complex perspectives by learning alternative texts which reveal new viewpoints and challenge familiar stories. Bookmark techniques offer an easy-to-use method for student engagement which encourages them to stop and think by asking questions such as “Who benefits from this?” and “What’s left unsaid?” during reading sessions. I believe these techniques will transform reading sessions into interactive experiences that empower students to become dynamic participants instead of passive listeners. These instructional methods effectively develop students into critical thinkers while nurturing their development beyond reading skills toward becoming inquisitive thinkers.
