By integrating scaffolding reading techniques with targeted vocabulary teaching I believe I can significantly improve my intermediate ELL student's ability to understand main ideas in texts. I would enhance his understanding by dividing texts into manageable parts and previewing them with him while posing questions to trigger his existing knowledge before he starts reading. I would ask him to mark important ideas in the text and then apply graphic organizers to summarize and link the main concepts after reading. I plan to teach essential vocabulary through explicit instruction that incorporates visuals and context clues along with student-centered activities such as word mapping and creating personalized example sentences. This teaching method enhances student engagement with content while helping him build confidence and understanding through relevant connections. I believe teaching core academic vocabulary through visual aids on a Word Wall provides ongoing reference support because knowing how to decode words does not automatically mean understanding their meaning. His recent school transition will benefit from a welcoming learning environment that utilizes humor and emotion while recognizing his achievements which will help him feel more comfortable and motivated to connect better with the learning process. Utilizing these multiple approaches will boost his understanding and build his confidence in his skills.
