Intermediate-level ELL students who decode well yet face comprehension difficulties can benefit from guided reading paired with metacognitive strategies. Initiate guided reading sessions that allow students to read texts related to their classroom topics along with their personal interests. Students will remain engaged while their reading skills develop through meaningful practice.

As students read they should learn to practice metacognition by understanding their thought processes. During read-aloud sessions, demonstrate how to handle difficult words or confusing sections by rereading or applying context clues. Require students to document their reading experiences in a journal or discuss effective reading techniques which will foster self-reflection and awareness.

These approaches turn reading into an interactive activity. These strategies guide students toward a profound comprehension of the text and fortify their reading confidence. Repeated practice paired with reflective thinking enables students to establish stronger connections with their reading material and to enhance their comprehension abilities.
