When considering Halliday's "language functions", it is important to recognize the way students learn a new language in group setting or cooperative learning environments. I would want to build this students vocabulary to a point that he can integrate socially because then that student will work up to consistently participating in social language every day. This is how an ELL will improve their mastery of the English language. Apart from the educational setting of my classroom, I want this student to gain confidence when speaking to a native English speaker during lunch, recess, specials, and outside of school.
