Scenario Response 6
I have an ELL right now who at the beginning of the year struggled with understanding what I was saying and also struggled with communicating back to me. We lived by Google Translates. Throughout the year he became much more socialized and learned English through using it with friends. In my opinion, the socialization is much more important. ELLs must build confidence in the language they are trying to learn. I would prioritize socializing to gain mastery over vocabulary. I teach middle school and not only are my ELLs learning English by socializing, but they are also texting which is engaging them in reading and writing even if its basic text lingo. For a student who is quiet and won't socialize I would go the vocabulary for socialization route.
