This student is a beginning writer. I would begin by engaging them in the process of writing about things they like to do or things they are already expert in doing. In this way, they have a foundation in the content and we can focus on sharing our expertise with others. They would write and revise several writing pieces that reflect an area of expertise and share with others. The initial sharing would occur in a small group setting with a guided rubric to indicate the focus of each writing piece For each rubric, we would have an I Do We Do session to understand the goal. This is where we would initially address concepts such as sequence, tense, etc. In addition to Peer Coaching taking place within each small group, I would be able to conduct on the spot editorial reviews of work in progress. After the first 3 weeks of small group writing, I would conference individually with each student and focus on gaps. After six weeks, we would begin to focus on writing more complex sentences to express ideas; and more focused paragraphs as we approach the intermediate level.
