While vocabulary is always an issue with struggling readers, my first approach/goal would be to ensure that the student is actually engaged in the material so that he/she will be engaged in the process of uncovering meaning. I would thus initially have the student respond to the text visually by creating artwork that contains the images or objects that stand out to the student. I would actually have all of the student in the class crate similar pieces of artwork and then we would display them in a gallery format and have the artists describe what they see. When not describing his /or her artwork, each student would go on a “gallery walk” to uncover how other students saw the same text. This activity would accomplish a number of goals: 1) allow this particular struggling ELL student an opportunity to take ownership of the process: 2) recognize achievement; 3) understand context through the eyes of the other students; and 4) incorporate visual learning into the process.
