I think it was a great idea to have children who attend the public school in Chinatown (Chicago) learn about the culture and the language of both the Chinese culture and African-American culture. This certainly helps bring the kids closer together and at the same time broadens their perspective about culture and language and how to communicate with others. The memory game was a great game. Singing songs was also a great way for the kids to learn the new language. In both instances, the approaches allowed the students to "visulaize" the language. In my own classes (I teach high school English), we work on visualizng the text either directly (we respond to a poem by creating a work of art that focuses on the images that rsonate with us); or in the case of dramatic work, we act out the scenes and focus on hwo the character was feeling when they delivered theri lines (why one emotion instgead of another? etc.).
