Reflection on Assignment 1
Reflection on Assignment 1
When planning Assignment 1, my biggest focus was aligning content and language objectives in a way that would meaningfully support both academic learning and language development for my ELLs. I wanted the lesson to not only meet science standards but also actively develop students' vocabulary and communication skills, especially for those reading below grade level. The part that took the most thought was figuring out how to balance academic rigor with accessibility—choosing texts and activities that were on grade level but still reachable for all learners, especially beginners and special education students. It was also challenging to write assessments that fairly measured comprehension and vocabulary without penalizing students for language gaps. Overall, I feel good about the plan. I built in a lot of support—sentence frames, leveled texts, visuals, and small-group time. My goal was to make sure every student had a clear entry point to the content, and I think this plan reflects that.
