For my own curriculum goals and work with students, I believe the most important ELA criterion is III. Responding to students’ varied needs for instructional support. Every class is full of diverse learners—students with different reading levels, language backgrounds, learning styles, and strengths. If I’m not meeting them where they are, even the most aligned or rigorous curriculum won’t matter. Tailoring instruction with scaffolds, visuals, small group support, and flexible pacing ensures students actually access the standards. When students feel supported, they’re more confident, engaged, and able to grow. Differentiation is what makes learning stick.
