I'll be honest here, I teach middle school social studies so I don't have a hand in teaching English directly. But when teaching new vocabulary like constitution, monarchy, sanctions, etc. repetition is key here. I try to use the new vocabulary words as often as possible during a lesson and I try to put as much emphasis on the word as I can I might sing the word or drag it out when I say it to make sure they pick up on the fact that I am using it and how I'm using it. I will also repeatedly ask my students for the definition. For example, I might say "Constitution! Con-sti-tu-tion! What is a constitution again?" I expect the students to answer back "A plan for government!" I think this helps my ELLs because there isn't really any pressure to say it correctly as if we are in a one-on-one lesson, they are chanting with a group of other students where mistakes are welcomed.
