Although building a student up to perform academically is the goal my experience shows that when students can communicate socially it attributes to the academic learning as well. It is important for people in general to be able to communicate with others so that they can discuss and learn from each other. This is what happens when you teach a student so they may be able to communicate independently. This also helps the student learn to express themselves which gives opportunities for them to articulate their weaknesses and strengths which in return helps the teacher understand ways that a student may need help to grow academically.
