I have used various ELA strategies throughout the years while teaching ELLs. I have found some to be most useful at the primary level are visual aids that include having a print rich environment with students native language that includes pictures and anchor charts that support academic vocabulary. Nonverbal cues like using gestures and body language helps. Peer collaborative learning experiences have been helpful with getting students to be comfortable with speaking in group settings. I also have found the importance in celebrating students achievements and diversity. It helps them to think more positively about making mistakes and how they are an important part of practicing towards mastery.
