Module 12 Discussion: SIOP
Mod 12
The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) is a research-based framework used to implement sheltered instruction effectively. It is a set of 8 key components and 30 features that guide teachers in planning and delivering lessons that support ELLs. These components focus on both language development and content mastery, helping teachers structure lessons to enhance student comprehension, participation, and language use. The SIOP model includes strategies such as:
- Clear language objectives,
- Scaffolding techniques,
- Grouping students for collaboration,
- Building background knowledge,
- Using visuals and hands-on activities.
In essence, SIOP helps teachers create a supportive environment where ELLs can learn both the subject matter and improve their English skills at the same time.
