Let's Meet and Greet Potluck
I would invite families by sending a flyer home in their native language and English. I would also ask all families to bring in their favorite dish from their culture to share with other families. I would also call families to get a little background information and make sure they are aware that translation services will be available for them at the potluck and that they will be given an opportunity to share something about their culture.
At the beginning of the meet and greet (about 20 minutes), potluck tables will be set up and “scream the theme” of the family cultures/nationalities/color. All foods would be displayed with their names, ingredients, and any cultural aspects or background information to why the family chose the dish.
As the families enjoy their food, I will give a power point presentation. In the beginning, I will welcome the families and introduce myself. Sharing background information about my family life and culture. The presentation will contain various visuals or examples of the information being shared.
The presentation will include and outline with examples of the following:
-
Classroom and school rules and expectations for a kindergartener.
-
Rituals and routines
-
Class schedule and the importance of being on time. Reading and Phonics is in the morning for friends learning to read.
-
Review nightly homework expectations
-
Display video on how to login to online learning program (parents will be provided an opportunity to get assistance at the end of meet and greet to set up parent focus account and login to student online portal for HW)
-
Review the best form of communication with the teacher, during, before, and afterschool: Thrillshare, Blooms, DOJO, etc.
-
Last slides will contain teacher contact information.
At the end, parents will have the opportunity to set up their online account and discover how to reach the students online platform to complete home learning assignment. I will invite the school's parent liaison to come in to intro herself to the families to give insight to the help that she can provide for them in and out of the classroom. I would also invite other colleagues to volunteer to provide help make this a success.
