I am a teacher at an alternative placement. Most times working in groups is not ideal or beneficial. Yet I am not saying it is difficult. The approach that I have taken is the Heterogenous approach and this method has worked for me. Students work with each other and encourage each other academically. Each class period is different but some are packed with a lot of cultural diversity and language proficiency. Do the group students that I have I try to give to them the most normal experience possible and in the hopeful chance they make new friendships. Through this process I have students that did not like reading, start reading. Students who did not like to write, start writing. Students who did not like to talk during discussion began to share. This is the most logical method in my class due to the population that we serve.
