Due to the high ESOL population at our school we have 2 Spanish speaking paras, 1 Russian speaking para and 1 French/Creole speaking para. Being that our scholars are spread out from K-5 the paras are stretched pretty thin. While I am not an ESOL teacher specifically learning to work with ESOL students has proven to be quite challenging to say the least. My students initially started off not talking but just listening to what was being said and drawing on their paper or in their book. I knew from a previous class  and a story that we read in class that this was a part of the way that the students begin to learn their second language. My scholars eventually started sitting directly next to ne and right up under me when we would have instruction on the carpet. Now they repeat some words back to me or say yes when they understand and even told me that they want to learn English. This is exciting because we made a deal they teach me a word or phrase and I do the same with them.
