Mod 11 Discussion: Teaching Critical Literacy
Module 11 Discussion- C. Bailey
One of the resources that I came across was a compare and contrast activity that has you to gather a number of items that have similarities and differences. This is an activity that I have used and still use when teaching comparing and contrasting texts to help them to understand how to identify what is the same and what is different between the two or three texts that the scholars are compare in order for them to be able to successfully answer questions.
It is important to make sure that the student can break down the questions and understand what task the question(s) is asking them to complete. I often find that the students aren't completing the task or answering the question correctly because they don't understand what is being asked of them. So the first read is to get an understanding of the text and pull out any words or phrases that they may not know or lack an understanding of, so they circle the words and underline the context clues that help them to understand the word or phrase
