Mod 5 Discussion: Formal and Informal Assessments
One formative assessment that I have used frequently and with success is Sentence Stems. Especially for ELL or even struggling readers, the Sentence Stems provides a kind of cognitive on ramp to check for comprehension, vocabulary familiarity and/or acquisition, and metacognition.
One formative assessment that I learned about in this module is the OPTIC strategy. This method seems to combine familiar and proven formative approach I have used in the past with a particular focus on spurring greater metacognition.
