Mod 1 Discussion: Classroom Implications of Linguistic Theory
Mod 1 Discussion
Considering what I just read regarding Second Language Theory it seems like there is a major necessity to create a classroom environment where students (specifically ELLs) feel safe to explore language learning without harsh correction or judgement.
The ELL student’s level of self-confidence impacts their overall ability to work toward language acquisition so avoiding overt correction can maintain their confidence.
Obviously making corrections to incorrect language usage and checking for accurate comprehension is required, but that can be done through less severe means that can seem punitive.
Making a game of comprehension, using non-verbal cues to assess for accuracy and understanding, and maintaining a lighthearted atmosphere can all work to create a safe, fun environment for learing.
