It is important to get to know and understand ELL students in our classrooms to help them to feel comfortable and want to learn.  It is important for us to understand whether a student is not making eye contact because they are intending to be disrespectul towards us, are feeling anxious, or it is viewed as disrepectful in their culture.  If we can understand our students better, that will help us to develop a good relationship with them and their families, which will assist us in helping the students succeed in the classroom. When we know and undersstand our students, we can help their peers know and understand them, which will lead to a better classroom community.
