Hetero grouping: By mixing students with native language, ELLs, and also at different ability/proficiency levels. This will call for language acquisition and cooperation with diverse backgrounds in one group.

Ability grouping: Make your groups based on their skills/proficiency levels. This will be the perfect time for focused instruction/small group where, of course, ELLs, but native-speaking students can receive extra support on what is needed at the time.
