I would do read-alouds of high interest chapter books but only a few chapters from a book so that they can see if it interest them, provides a connection, and gives them the chance to try out several different books and authors to see what they are interested in. I would incorporate reading notebooks to serve as a companion guide to what we are reading in the classroom. Extensive vocab and word studies to ensure that their vocab skills coordinates with the high interest books for their grade level. We would also read song lyrics and do reading rules off of these hits as it boost confidence and gives them a jumping off point.
