Several early literacy strategies appropriate for an inclusive classroom include the use of pictures, showing videos, modeling/demonstrating explicit examples, creating word maps, scaffolding with graphic organizers (KWL chart).

Content videos are great for all students! They build background knowledge and spark student interest in the subject matter. For ELL students, subtitles in their home language can help them understand and detect the english language.

Graphic organizers for the win everytime. These are great for organizing any type of  information. When reading non-fiction text, KWL charts are a great way to activate student’s prior knowledge, guide them to predict/ask questions, and encourage them to comprehend context. Depending on the acquisition level, an ELL student could draw pictures to connect prior knowledge.
