Assuming this is an ELL student in Florida, my assumption would be that he is a field-dependent learner based on his behavior and preference for group work. Most students from non-European backgrounds are from collectivist cultures that emphasize working together toward a common goal. This being said, my own children (non-ELL/ European descent) are field- independent learners, but would also behave this way in the classroom setting. It would be up to the teacher to recognize what is culturally appropriate and preferred with each student.
