Scenario Response 1
Module 3 Discussion
Krashen’s Second Language Acquisition (SLA)/Brain Based Theory most accurately applies to this scenario. As this student moves through the phases of language acquisition, the teacher should prioritize maintaining a supportive, low-stress environment where routines ensure predictability. The classroom should be a language-rich place with plenty of visual aids available to her. The student should often engage in buddy work and activities that are repetitive- especially activities that incorporate listening and responding. While listening and responding should be part of learning, the teacher should not be concerned that the student may not be speaking every time, since Krashen’s theory has a “silent“ phase that the student is currently and successfully outgrowing. As she continues to make progress, her efforts to use language should be frequently praised.
