Mod 7 Discussion: Cross Cultural Awareness

Our learners are very emotionally involved with a lot of the decisions they make and ideas they have. Teaching them cultural empathy, I feel, is the strongest way to develop an understanding of cultures in these learners. I recall one of my favorite lessons to teach, when in Intensive Reading, was the story of Malala Yousafzai. Many of our children do not understand how valuable their educations are. For my learners who grew up in countries where education wasn't a guarantee, it gave them a platform to speak and be heard. By the end of the lesson it felt as though everyone had a deeper appreciation of other cultures and education.
