Scenario Response 3
Scenario Response 3
These new students would have different educational and social emotional needs.
The student who studied extensively in her homeland will most likely be able to adapt to their new classroom environment with ease. This student probably has educated parents, who not only prioritize education, but support and encourage the student’s academic success. Coming from a stable, consistent homelife with higher socioeconomic status most likely means the student has been exposed to adequate background knowledge and conversation skills. In turn, this will benefit great academic and social success. Additionally, they will be familiar with classroom structure, routines, and study habits. They may already know how to read and write in their home language. In order to provide appropriate instruction to this student, I will need to determine where the student was performing academically in their native language.
The student who was uprooted from school during a civil war will likely require extensive academic needs, along with social emotional support. This student probably comes from a family with lower income or socioeconomic status, where education is not top priority. Parents may have little to no education. With that being said, background knowledge and conversation skills may be limited. I can assume this student experienced instability, and possibly did not feel safe or did not have the privilege to go to school. They may be apprehensive about starting school, or even have a negative attitude or unwillingness to meet school expectations. Providing consistent routines, structure, and clear expectations, along with ensuring that the student feels safe will be key. In order to provide appropriate support, I will need to determine where the student was performing academically in their native language.
Above all, learning about the students’ cultural and educational background will support a smooth transition. Neither student will be academically successful until they feel safe. Therefore, providing a suitable environment is step one. Once you have determined where they stand academically, you can support their needs in meaningful ways.
