The student is in the acquisition versus learning hypothesis phase.  The silent state is something the teacher should be appreciative of this stage and continue to exhibit patience as the student become more comfortable with the learning methods in the classroom.  It is important to create lesson plans that engage the student’s interests as she moves through the silent phase which will allow her to continue to open up and become more comfortable so she can move to the natural order hypothesis.
