One formative assessment I have used with success in the past is the exit ticket strategy. At the end of a lesson or learning activity, I would ask students to respond to a prompt related to the day's objectives or key concepts on a small slip of paper, which they would then submit before leaving the classroom.

 

What was successful about this approach was its simplicity and efficiency. It provided me with immediate feedback on students' understanding of the lesson content, allowing me to quickly gauge which concepts needed further reinforcement or clarification. Additionally, it helped students reflect on their own learning and identify any areas where they may need additional support.

 

Moving forward, one formative assessment approach from this module that I'd like to use is the use of language portfolios. Language portfolios allow students to collect and reflect on samples of their own language learning over time, including written work, recordings of spoken language, and other language artifacts.

 

I believe using language portfolios would be beneficial because they provide a holistic view of students' language development and progress, allowing both students and teachers to track growth and set language learning goals collaboratively. Additionally, language portfolios promote metacognitive skills and self-reflection, as students are actively involved in selecting and evaluating their own work. By implementing language portfolios, I can provide more personalized and targeted support to meet the diverse needs of my English Language Learners and foster a more student-centered approach to language learning assessment.
