SIOP is all about supporting ELL's while still recognizing and even celebrating their diverse backgrounds. It involves these actions:

  • Lesson Prep: When the teacher things about their students' backgrounds and pick materials that resonate with them culturally. Incorporate texts, images, and topics that reflect their experiences and interests.

  • Background Building: When a tacher activates what their students already know and connect it to what you're teaching. They should make content relevant to students' lives by making connections to their home cultures.

  • Easy-to-Get Info: When a teacher uses clear, easy-to-understand language, visuals, and real-world examples to help everyone understand, regardless of their English level. They should also make complex concepts more simple and provide multiple modes of representation.

  • Teaching Tricks: SIOP offers loads of cool strategies that work for all learners, like group activities and hands-on stuff. Teachers can incorporate interactive and engaging activities that promote collaboration and active participation in their classroom.

  • Lots of Chatter: Teachers should encourage students to talk and work together. It's not just about learning English; it's about learning from each other's diverse perspectives and experiences. Teachers should encourage this as much as possible. When  students can interact with others and have supportive teachers, peer learning can be invaluable.
