Mod 6 Discussion: Language Acquisition in a Cultural Context
Mod 6 Discussion
In my journalism class, I use cultural interviews and vocabulary journals to boost language skills and cultural understanding. Students interview classmates, peers who are not in our class but attend the school, or sometimes even faculty, from different backgrounds and write articles about their stories, which improves their writing and interviewing skills while helping them learn about other cultures. They also keep vocabulary journals to track new words and their parts (i.e. prefixes, roots, suffixes) from different subjects, making vocabulary learning more personal and relevant. These activities not only help with language skills but also help students appreciate different cultures. Overall, these activities promote my ultimaate goal of creating a culturally inclusive space where students feel safe to share and learn.
