Mod 3 Discussion: Moving Students Into a New Culture
Mod 3 Discussion
I have for sure experienced culture shock when I taught English seminars in Bejing, China 2015-2017. Teaching English in China was quite the adventure. Figuring out Mandarin tones was a real struggle – "Ma" meant four different things, which often led to some crazy and embarrising mix-ups. But the best thing I learned was how to order food – a skill that came in handy daily!
Reflecting on my experience, I couldn't help but think about my students back home. While ordering food was essential in China, I realized the importance of academic language for my students' success. Looking at them in my classroom, I see the potential for growth and the need to equip them with the language skills they'll need to thrive academically.
Overall, Teaching in China showed me how important it is to be understanding and patient with students from different cultures. I learned that everyone should feel respected and included in class, no matter where they're from or how well they speak English. So now, I make sure to bring cultural awareness into my teaching, making it a better experience for everyone.
