With this student, my first impression is that the student is either not fully confident in their reading and feels slightly alienated from their peers OR they may not have a firm foundation for enjoying reading itself. I have had students who were in both situations, one who lacked confidence and one who constantly stated that reading was "boring". In both situations, I would encourage similar answers. First, I would encourage reading every single day to build of confidence and hopefully find a genre that the student can really enjoy reading. The student will want to read more if they find something they enjoy, which will help fix either confidence or boredom when reading. Also, along with reading every day I would "create plenty of activities that involve visual, auditory, or tactile and kinesthetic learning." I find with reading, especially with older grades, the "fun" gets set aside. You can create games, fun songs, visuals, opportunities to move (scavenger hunts for example) or other ways to get students really involved in what they read. This provides a fun alternative to written comprehension checks, which can build confidence but also not just be another "paper to fill out."
