Mod 11 Mid-Course Reflection and Self-Assessment

1. Language as a system of learning

Language as a system of learning fosters metacognitive awareness and self-regulation skills, assisting students to monitor and evaluate their own learning processes effectively. Through linguistic interactions with students and teachers, students engage in collaborative cultural activities that promote deeper understanding and retention of the students’ culture.  

2. The relevance of including culture in your curriculum

Recognizing and valuing students' diverse backgrounds, especially English Language Learners, is achieved through the incorporation of culture into the curriculum. This integration of cultural references in teaching fosters language acquisition and strengthens students' sense of belonging and identity. Making small but impactful changes can significantly influence students' attitudes towards diversity

3. Cultural sensitivity

In our diverse world, being culturally sensitive is not just a good quality, it's a necessary skill for effective communication and crucial for promoting understanding and unity. Understanding the cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and values of those you are addressing is key to connecting with them. Customize your message to align with their cultural values and avoid perpetuating stereotypes or biases about different cultures. Instead, present a range of perspectives authentically

1. Home language and its relationship to a child’s academic progress

The language students use in academic settings differs greatly from the casual speech they use in everyday life. Academic language encompasses common words like reason and understand, as well as general academic vocabulary such as respond and category, along with specialized terminology.  

5. Linguistic routines

Using the language experience approach in language instruction assists learners to leverage their personal language and life encounters for skill development. This approach enhances the relevance and significance of learning, but it is crucial to be mindful of learners' cultural disparities and sensitivities.  

6. The impact of learning a 2nd language in content

The Two Way Dual Language program has a profound impact on students in various subjects. It enables them to master two languages and grasp academic concepts thoroughly. This method fosters bilingualism and literacy, equipping students with a competitive edge in the modern interconnected world.

7. Scaffolding

Teachers can support English Language Learners in participating in discussions across various learning situations by utilizing strategies such as repeating, rephrasing, and expanding on responses. This type of scaffolding can be achieved through the use of referential questions, contingent and multiple-option display questions and incorporating contextual vocabulary.

8. High quality early childhood  

Instilling the love of reading at an early age can greatly influence a child's cognitive, social, and emotional development. As someone who values the importance of literacy, it's a fulfilling part of my job to promote early learning at home.

9. Structured speaking and listening

Structured speaking and listening practices are often facilitated through various communication techniques that aim to optimize the exchange of information. These may include methods such as turn-and-talk, where speakers take turns expressing ideas without interruptions, or paraphrasing exercises that require listeners to restate the speaker's message in their own words for clarification.
