Video 1 Engaging Students in Collaborative Academic Discussions grades 3-8:

I liked the way the teacher connected the chapter with the Declaration of Human Rights. Students were able to pull out similarities and differences while looking at real world events (text-to-world). The teacher also tied the learning target back to the lesson (I would have read the standard here). Students focused on one character they wanted to know more about (I would have used the KWL chart here).  Students delved deeper into that character's traits by studying the character (I would have had students use the questioning method here). Students worked in groups while staying on task. Student's took detailed notes (I would have had students annotate here). Students located text evidence (tell us exactly where you found this information). Students used the Jigsaw method and taught each other. Students reflected on the group work they had done. I enjoyed watching the Jigsaw Method used from beginning to end.

Video 2: Group Work & Group Discussions: Management in the Active Classroom

Student were taught, don't pick same person you always work with (students need to observe  different strategies & formats of various learners). Good habits to follow is to  look each other in the eye when speaking. Use anchor charts (give hints of what something is or does) because students really do pay attention to them. Students need to be taught how to work together by sharing ideas, respecting & listening to others).
